Stuck at Jolingkong (4700m) in a snowstorm for 6 days with harsh weather and limited resources, there was a panic on the faces of the fellow travelers, the local dhabawalas, army men, porters and every single person out there. The roads were blocked, tents buried under 5 ft snow, water frozen, food was running out and we witnessed an unfortunate death of a traveler from Mumbai.

In this otherwise chaotic conditions, a 8 year child - Vansh belonging from the nearby village of Kuti stood out. He used to hop from one tent to another wearing his hawai chappals in heavy snowfall. He helped his parents who ran a small dhaba for the visitors with small errands. Unlike the grown ups trying to move away to safety, he seemed to enjoy this experience talking to the travelers, playing with them and watching the landscape enveloped in white.

This joyous little kid was a reminder for us not to forget enjoying ourselves and being happy even when everything around seems discouraging. A reminder that the circumstances were dire, but whether we faced it with a heavy heart or a smile on our faces was a choice we had to make.

- From my trip to Adi Kailash, Pithoragarh dist, Uttarakhand.

After a very unusual and challenging year 2020, 2021 had started with high hopes and a lot of travel plans. Reflecting back on 2021 on the last day of the year, this year seems to have come with a fair bit of challenges, memories, exciting moments and learnings.

I was lucky to have travelled quite a bit in 2021 which included a 75 km trek to Nandikund lake and two long workcations in Uttarakhand and Himachal. However, the experience I would always remember was the hell of an adventure I had at Adi Kailash in October. This trip was an ultimate strength of motorcycling skills, mental strength and physical tolerance.

Stuck in heavy snowfall and hostile weather for 6 days with limited resources and lot of chaos, this beautiful landscape at Jolingkong (Adi Kailash) was a reminder that all's not that bad as it seems. There's always something to look forward to and something to enjoy even in the worst of times - only our pursuit for better days and things we love should never stop.

- From my trip to Adi Kailash, Pithoragarh dist, Uttarakhand last October.

I have traveled across Uttarakhand, Kinnaur, Spiti and Pangi Valley - Sach Pass, but the road to Adi Kailash / Kailash Mansarovar was much more difficult and tiring.

Dust, slush, sand, gravel and water crossings along an extremely steep route with sharp cuts and a hostile terrain is what makes this road a real challenge for motorists and drivers. However, the views along the Indo-Tibet-Nepal border from this route are simply breath taking.

Reaching Parvati Tal near Jolingkong at an altitude of 4700 metres riding on my motorcycle was a big challenge and a special achievement. It took us two days of off-roads, some hard riding along steep paths, several water crossings and most importantly a lot of patience to reach here.

Often referred as Chhota Kailash,
Adi Kailash is a sacred mountain standing tall at an altitude of almost 6000 metres. This beautiful mountain is noted and revered for its close resemblance with Mount Kailash.

This is a view of Adi Kailash from the tourist / army camp at Jolingkong near the Indo-Tibet border. The mountain and surrounding landscapes were completely covered in snow after a strong snow blizzard that lasted for three full days.

The route between Dharchula and Adi Kailash / Kailash Mansarovar is one of the most beautiful yet very little explored regions of Uttarakhand and the Indian Himalayas.

The route goes along the Tibet - Nepal border and is dotted with small remote villages and surreal landscapes.

This is the view near Garbyang - a small village on this route, which is also known as the 'Sinking Village' due to the natural phenomena which causes the houses built here to sink about a feet in the earth every single year.

The best sunshine comes after the longest storms!

After being stuck for 3 nights and 2 days with a strong snowstorm, we were welcomed by Sun and clear weather on the morning of our 4th day at Jolingkong - the base of Adi Kailash. The entire landscape was enveloped in snow and our motorcycles were buried in 5 Feet deep snow.

This photo is after atleast 2-3 hours of digging and clearing snow to bring back our motorcycles on the surface. A pleasant feeling indeed!

One of the my life changing moments was my first trip to the Himalayas about 10 years back. A lot of my life goals, priorities, dreams, memories and friendships have all been linked to my journeys in the Himalayas since then.

Exploring the Himalayas is also finding yourself.
